How To Draw A Cartoon Flower
Learning how to draw can be dull sometimes—you need to practice a lot, rarely seeing any progress. In this tutorial I'll attempt to make learning more fun for you. I will evidence y'all how to use 3 pencils to program, sketch, shade, and stop three cute flowers: a daisy, and orchid, and a lily of the valley. This can be a nifty practice, and you'll actually stop upwardly with a fully rendered drawing when y'all finish!
Earlier you start, read the introduction of How to Draw Copse to learn which tools you need for this tutorial.
1. How to Depict a Daisy
We'll start with the simplest type of flower: a daisy. This little, humble flower is easy to draw, but we'll brand it more challenging by using an interesting perspective. If you need a reference, you can check out photos on Envato Market, for example:
- Daisies in shut-up - no longer bachelor
- Daisy seen from the back - no longer bachelor
- Multiple daisies - no longer bachelor
Step 1
Describe a short stem with a distorted cross on top. Draw very lightly, making the strokes almost invisible. The photo below is heavily darkened to help you see the lines, just you lot should barely run into yours! Use this technique until I tell you to stop.
Step 2
Apply the cross to draw an ellipse distorted by perspective. This will exist the central part of the flower called the "disk".
Step 3
Draw a bigger ellipse around, with its eye slightly above the cross.
Pace 4
Draw another ellipse; place it even higher. This volition aid us plant the perspective of the petals.
Step 5
Now, describe radial lines coming from the center. Starting time brand them directly...
... and so they can be gently curved.
Step half dozen
Treat these lines as the centre axes of the petals—you can press slightly harder at present. Make the "vertical" ones quite broad...
... and the "horizontal" ones narrower.
Step 7
Add together gentle arcs on top of every petal to finish them following the previous style. Vertical—wide:
Horizontal—narrow:
Step 8
Add shorter petals nether and above the others to fill the gaps and make it more natural.
Step 9
Describe the outline of the stem. First exercise it very lightly, and then adjust it with slightly darker strokes.
Pace 10
Let'south work on the disk now. It has a special blueprint, and so permit'due south create information technology with a trick. Beginning draw spiral rays coming from the center—do it very lightly.
Then cross them with rays coming in the opposite direction.
Step 11
Stress the pattern by pressing harder.
Pace 12
Subtly shade the disk—it tin be concave or convex.
Step xiii
Take a softer brush and accentuate the shading.
Pace 14
Let's go dorsum to the petals now. Fill them with gentle rays following their perspective. Employ a hard pencil.
Step fifteen
Use the aforementioned pencil to slightly shade the petals. Keep in mind they're white, so try to go out every bit much whiteness as possible.
Step 16
Give the tips of the petals a gently serrated edge.
Stride 17
Take a softer pencil and make the shading more visible. Accentuate the edges of the petals with it too.
Step eighteen
Take a difficult brush and shade the stem. It's supposed to be darker than the petals, so don't leave any whiteness.
Step 19
Take a softer brush and increment the darkness of shading on the stem.
Pace xx
Use the softest pencil to terminate shading the stem. The darkness part of information technology will be our point of reference for the overall contrast.
Step 21
Use a soft brush to adjust the contrast of the deejay to what we've just established. Don't make it too dark—it's bright, after all.
Pace 22
Use the same pencil to adapt the contrast of the petals.
Step 23
Use the softest pencil to add a pinch of black in the darkest crevices. This volition increase the overall contrast of the motion picture and will brand the petals brighter.
2. How to Depict an Orchid
Orchids are a large family unit of very beautiful flowers taking many interesting shapes. I will testify you just one species, just feel free to modify my lessons to create something on your own. Here are a few handy references from Envato Market:
- Pink orchids - no longer bachelor
- White orchids - no longer bachelor
- Orchid in close-upwardly - no longer available
Step ane
Again, let'south showtime with the hard pencil. Draw the stem very, very lightly.
Step 2
Add lilliputian circles where you want the flowers to be.
Step 3
Our flowers volition await similar birds. First, draw their "heads" with "optics" and "beaks".
Stride 4
Add together the wings and tail. These lines should institute the perspective of each bloom.
Step five
Add together three more than lines betwixt the previous ones.
Step six
This is the fundamental office of the orchid blossom. You lot can imagine information technology every bit the curled feet of a bird.
Footstep 7
Requite those feet... horns (yep, we tin't use that bird metaphor anymore).
Footstep 8
Add ii curved "arms" to the tail office.
Step 9
Draw little butterflies using the "horns" every bit a support for the upper pair of wings...
... and the "tail artillery" every bit a support for the lower pair.
Step ten
Connect the butterfly with the bird head with a long curved "neck".
Step 11
Yous can at present depict the big petals behind the butterfly.
Pace 12
The flowers are fully sketched at present, then depict the buds now—the farther, the smaller.
Stride 13
Depict the rest of the stem.
Step 14
Fourth dimension for shading! Use a hard pencil kickoff to prepare the values. Make the stem and the butterfly part darker. This shade departure between them and the bright petals is what we demand to follow until the stop of the shading.
Step 15
Draw subtle rays on the large petals.
Footstep 16
Give the large petals clear eye lines.
Step 17
Create a spray effect all around those middle lines. These part is going to exist darker than the residue of the petals.
Step eighteen
Take a softer brush and brand the stalk and dark butterflies darker.
Step 19
Take the softest brush and make those night parts even darker, but don't use black yet.
Step 20
Chip the central part of the flower.
Pace 21
Let's finish establishing the contrast: press your softest pencil hard to achieve blackness in some places.
Footstep 22
We need to adjust the dissimilarity of the remainder of the picture. Get back to the medium soft pencil and darken the pattern on the large petals.
Stride 23
Take a hard pencil and darken the petals subtly, leaving a thick, white outline at the edges.
Footstep 24
Accept the softest pencil one time again and use it to add a touch of blackness to the flowers. Not too much, though!
Step 25
I decided to increase the dissimilarity of the flowers past making the butterfly parts even darker.
3. How to Draw a Lily of the Valley
Lily of the valley has a unique name and shape—its flowers course a row of tiny bells growing from a single stem. This structure makes it quite easy to draw, but experience gratuitous to check some references if you need help:
- A bouquet of lilies of the valley - no longer available
- Lily of the valley, close-up - no longer available
- Lily of the valley with make clean background - no longer bachelor
Step one
Depict the stem first using the hard pencil, and so add gentle arcs all over information technology. They must follow gravity.
Step 2
Attach a little "cup" to each branching stem.
Step iii
Create guide lines for the petals...
... and and then use them to consummate the shape.
Stride four
Add some width to the stem and attach little "leaves" for every branching stalk.
Stride v
Add together a leafage or 2 to make the composition more interesting.
Step 6
Darken the steam and leaves using the difficult pencil.
Step 7
Take a softer pencil and subtly shade the aforementioned parts.
Step 8
Use the same pencil, but this time press harder to achieve a darker shade.
Step 9
Take the softest pencil and add together very dark accents here and there to adjust the contrast.
Pace 10
Go back to the hard pencil to requite a bones shading to the flowers.
Pace 11
Take a softer pencil and darken the lower part of the flowers a niggling. The more white you lot get out, the whiter the flowers volition seem in the finish.
Step 12
Press harder to add darker accents. Make sure your pencil is precipitous before doing this, or you'll darken the white flowers too much!
Beautiful! You lot Did It!
You take drawn a daisy, an orchid, and a lily of the valley, but y'all've also done much more than that—yous have learned the basics of sketching and shading that you tin use now in other projects. The same tricks volition work for drawing anything yous tin can imagine: vehicles, buildings, animals, fantastic creatures...
But if y'all just want to continue cartoon unproblematic, fun things, check out How to Draw Trees. Yous tin can also endeavour my previous flower-related tutorial: How to Draw a Rose.
